PARS‑DMSA® is a sterile, non‑pyrogen lyophilized powder kit for the preparation of 99mTc‑DMSA, intended solely for diagnostic use. After radiolabeling with Tc‑99m, the prepared radiopharmaceutical is primarily used for static renal imaging. The kit contains 1.2 mg of dimercaptosuccinic acid as a sterile, non‑pyrogen lyophilized powder. The prepared radiopharmaceutical is administered intravenously.
- Evaluation of renal function
- Assessment and measurement of pediatric renal function (including structural evaluation, size and shape assessment, detection of urinary tract infection, and related parameters)
- Diagnosis of pyelonephritis (kidney infection) and its effects on renal tissue
- Evaluation of the destructive effects of other diseases on the kidneys
- Further evaluation when a kidney is not visualized or appears small on ultrasound
- Evaluation of transplanted kidney function
- Assessment of kidney function in patients with severe hypertension
- Investigation of suspected vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessel walls)
99mTc‑DMSA accumulates specifically in the proximal tubular cells of the kidneys. This property makes it highly suitable for imaging the renal cortex (the outer part of the kidney). After injection, 99mTc‑DMSA localizes to the proximal tubular cells—which are involved in the filtration and reabsorption of substances from the blood—allowing clear visualization of the renal cortex on nuclear medicine imaging. This feature helps physicians accurately assess kidney function and detect conditions such as functional disorders, tissue damage, or renal infections.
