PARS‑ECD® is formulated for diagnostic use and helps physicians assess cerebral blood flow using SPECT imaging. The ECD kit is used for the preparation of 99mTc‑Bicisate. Imaging with this radiopharmaceutical provides precise information on cerebral perfusion.
Due to its N2S2 structure, Bicisate is a stable and lipophilic compound that readily crosses the blood–brain barrier. Once in the brain, it is converted into acidic metabolites, which cause it to become trapped and retained within brain tissue. Its uptake and distribution are directly dependent on cerebral blood flow; therefore, in areas affected by stroke or reduced perfusion, radiopharmaceutical accumulation is decreased.
99mTc‑Bicisate is selectively fixed in brain cells and, as it circulates through cerebral blood flow, can be detected using a gamma camera. This method helps physicians provide a more accurate diagnosis.
